ABOUT
Queer-Centred Bodywork with a Big Heart
Hi and welcome :)
I’m Indy, an holistic therapist based in Hackney, London. I have over 16 years experience working with different kinds of bodywork including massage, trauma processing and energy work. I am also a facilitator, writer, activist and artist.
As a therapist, I am deeply caring and passionate about holding space for the entirety of a person in every session - physically, emotionally and spiritually. I’m sensitive in listening to what your body needs, and I enjoy working slowly and thoroughly. I work intuitively and love to invite in different modalities depending on what is needed in the moment.
WHAT I OFFER
A session with me can be one or any combination of Ayurbalance Myofascial Release, ScarWork, Relaxing, Deep Tissue, Mobilisations and Muscle Energy Techniques and Reiki. Equally, it can be unstructured and intuitive, which is my favourite way to work. I also offer pregnancy and postnatal massage for all bodies.
While I am qualified in everything I offer, I credit much of my learning to curiosity, practice, intuition and from plants and Shipibo healers in working with plant medicine. I have practiced various forms of massage and bodywork most of my life. Please see my Trainings list below for info on what I have studied and qualified in.
I am a trauma informed practitioner and am constantly working on how to hold safer space for marginalised folks in my sessions. I like to work in an environment that is cosy, informal and alchemical and unless you prefer otherwise, I will use essential oils, scents and music.
QUEER-CENTRED PRACTICE
I work with all bodies, however you identify. My practice centres marginalised folx, which means I feel comfortable in providing a safer space to be treated for those who may feel uncomfortable in mainstream therapeutic settings.
I also offer sliding scale to make treatments accessible for those who cannot afford standard London rates. I make this aspect of my practice most visible, because through visibility we are easy to find for people who need this, and through visibility we are also educating people along the way.
I believe that healing through the body needs to be available, accessible and comfortable for everyone. My approach is through bodywork as a healingh vehicle for transformation and social justice, and a fundamental tool towards community repair and collective liberation. I am genderqueer (they/them pronouns) and sensitive to differences in the way people like their bodies to be approached. My practice is led by sensitivity and consent, and is trans, queer and sex worker inclusive. Inclusivity for all bodies is something that I am constantly developing in my own practice and awareness, so while I do not claim to be fully knowledgeable as to what all bodies need, my approach is one of openness, non-judgement and growth.
ABOUT ME
I am socialised as white (with Welsh/British/Indian/Portugese Sephardi/Colombian/Afghan ancestry) and am trans non-binary, neurodivergent and parent to a giant young soul. I came to bodywork through my work with movement and the body, a passion for healing and through arts and activism.
I trained in movement theatre and spent some years devising and performing political theatre as part of a company. I also practiced yoga, wrestling and trapeze. I worked for 7 years as a costume and set designer, and art director. I then went on to work in Peru with Indigenous land rights using theatre, video and facilitation in collaborations with Shipibo communities, artists and activists. Since returning to the UK I have focused on bodywork, community facilitation (Healing Justice London, S&R, Rebel Soul and independently).
Anti-oppression of all kinds is and has always been core to my values and practices; I have been involved in numerous collectives , organisations and actions creating space for and teaching anti-racism, queer and trans inclusivity and collective liberation for those who have experienced structural and interpersonal trauma.
ACCESSIBILITY
My home studio is in an informal setting in my cosy living room. I live on the ground floor of an estate block. There are 5 long stairs at the entrance which is possible for a buggy so could be possible for a wheelchair with assistance. The front door and hallway corridor into my flat have a clearance of 70cm. The toilet is not wheelchair accessible, I am happy to assist. If my space is not accessible to you, I am happy to travel to you for a treatment.
If you do not identify as marginalised, I am more than happy to work with you! It is important to me however that the people that reach me are aware of the structure and politics of my practice, and understand who I centre in my outlook.
